Janice Snyder Realty moves toward 20-year mark There isn't much in her 30 years in the real estate business that has shaken Janice Snyder, and she remains optimistic about the Oswego real estate market, despite a decrease in 2007 listings. Snyder, licensed broker and president/CEO of Janice Snyder Realty in Oswego, opened her business in 1989, just before local home sales hit a recession-related slump. Undeterred, she waited out the storm, had faith in the community, and will soon celebrate her 20th year in business. "I'm a 'boutique' company", she said. "I look to provide a real understanding of our clients and customer's needs so we can provide them with exceptional service." And 2008 is looking better already, she said. Snyder predicts more young people will be buying homes locally in 2008. She also rejects the notion of a housing slump, at least in the greater Oswego County area. "Our marketplace in 2007, it is not as grim as the national news would have you think. We've always been slow and steady, and I've been saying that. We've had (home) appreciation." Local prices haven't seen an inflation, so there aren't the highs and lows, many other communities across the country face. And the federal government's decisions to cut interest rates is likely to drive real estate's coveted spring markets, said Snyder. "That's very exciting," she said. "I'm expecting 2008 to be a better market." As a real estate broker and owner of her own company, Snyder said she focuses on giving buyers and sellers information. "Last year, we had a lot of people investing here," she said. "They do have some concerns with our taxes." Still, Snyder expects both value and numbers of units sold to see a healthy increase in 2008. She also notices a trend where people are moving back to the area, either to retire or to simply come back to a place where the quality of living is high, and the cost of living is not. "The Oswego area is a very good place to buy, and sellers shouldn't be afraid to sell," she said. "Properties are moving." Each year, she hosts a seminar designed to educate the buying public about the process of buying a home, or property. The seminar, held in early April, is always well received, and includes an attorney, lender, and home inspector to offer their thoughts on the process. "I think people enjoy the opportunity to learn," said Snyder. "Our role is to simplify the process even more." This year, three agents from Janice Snyder Realty will receive achievement awards from the Oswego County Board of Realtors at its annual meeting in April.
